In addition to his roles as Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law and Research Fellow (Nuclear Law and Policy) at the School of Public Policy at the University of Calgary, Dr. Tscherning is also an Associate Professor II at the Faculty of Law, University of Bergen, Norway.

A graduate of the Institute for Comparative Law, Conflict of Laws and International Business Law at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg, Germany (Faculty of Law, PhD in international construction law dispute resolution for energy infrastructure projects), Professor Tscherning is a past visiting research fellow at the Canadian Institute of Resources Law. Dr. Tscherning has previously served as founding director of the Center for Energy and Sustainability Law at Qatar University College of Law, where he also was a Lecturer of Law teaching in energy and sustainability law and policy. Before joining academia, he trained and practised as a solicitor in London, England (2005-2009).

Since joining the University of Calgary, Dr. Tscherning has secured research funding from the University of Calgary Transdisciplinary Connector Grant Competition 2023 (Consolidating Stream), the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation/Foundation for Natural Resources Law, the Canadian Foundation for Legal Research, and the Alberta Law Foundation. He was awarded both the 2020 and 2018 Stikeman Elliott LLP Research Fellowship in Corporate Law. Professor Tscherning received the 2023 Howard Tidswell Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence for his ongoing efforts to internationalise the Faculty of Law's energy and private law courses. He also received honourable mention for the University of Calgary's 2022 International Achievement Award and for the University of Calgary's 2020 Sustainability Teaching Award. Dr. Tscherning is a co-author of the University of Calgary's energy research strategy "Energy for the Common Good 2023", developed with a group of eight transdisciplinary scholars in energy research.

Research Activities

Dr. Tscherning researches and teaches in the areas of domestic and international energy and natural resources law, infrastructure and construction law, and the conflict of laws (private international law). His scholarly activities focus on clean and renewable energy, in particular nuclear energy, hydrogen, natural gas/LNG, and offshore wind energy; supply chain security for critical strategic minerals/raw materials for the clean energy transition; the construction and regulation of energy infrastructure; climate adaptation of critical infrastructure; private international law; and international commercial law.

Prospective Graduate Students

Dr. Tscherning has very limited capacity for graduate student supervision until the academic year 2024/25. Unsolicited graduate supervision solicitations may not be replied to. Your topic of study must relate directly to either nuclear energy, offshore wind energy, the hydrogen economy or critical strategic minerals. Given the geographic focus of ongoing projects, applications by prospective graduate students from the EU/EEA, UK, Australia, Sultanate of Oman, Namibia and South Africa are particularly encouraged.
