(November 25), Professor Jennifer Koshan made a presentation on "Medically Assisted Dying - Past, Present and Future", as part of the Saturday Morning Law School lecture series, funded by Alberta Law Foundation. There were 62 registrants. 


October 2016

(October 29), Professors Arlene Kwasniak and Alastair Lucas, made a presentation on How Public are Public Lands, as part of the Saturday Morning at the Law School lecture series, funded by the Alberta Law Foundation.  There were 60 registrants. (Slides)

(Oct 13-14) CIRL and the Dalhousie University Faculty of Law organized the sixth national symposium Environment in the Courtroom: Marine Environments. This symposium, funded by Environment and Climate Change Canada.  


September 2016

(September 24), Judy Stewart, LLM PhD, made a presentation on “The Role of Environmental Governance Networks in Alberta’s Watershed-scale Integrated Resource Management System”, as part of the Saturday Morning at the Law School lecture series, funded by the Alberta Law Foundation.  There were 35 registrants.

(Sept 27-30) David Laidlaw, CIRL Research Fellow, will be participating in the Under Western Skies 2016 Conference, held at the Mount Royal University in Calgary on September 27-30, 2016.


July 2016

Research Associate Dr Chilenye Nwapi published an article titled "Realising the Africa Mining Vision: The Role of Government-Initiated International Development Think Tanks" (2016) 7:1 Journal of Sustainable Development Law and Policy 158 - 182.

Dr Judy Stewart joined CIRL as a Research Fellow on July 1. Dr. Stewart practices law in Cochrane, Alberta, primarily in the area of municipal and water law. She obtained her master of laws and PhD respectively from the faculties of law and environmental design of the University of Calgary.


June 2016

(Jun 4) Fenner Stewart, Assistant Professor of Law, University of Calgary, made a presentation on "An Introduction to Oil and Gas Law", as part of the Saturday Morning at the Law School lecture series, funded by the Alberta Law Foundation. There were 70 registrants. (Slides)

(May 24) Martin Olszynski, Assistant Professor of Law, University of Calgary, made a presentation on "Experiments Gone Wrong? An Empirical Assessment of Adaptive Management in Canada’s Energy Resources Sector". This event was held at the University of Calgary and was funded by the Alberta Law Foundation. There were 27 registrants.

(May 22-24) David Laidlaw, CIRL Research Fellow, made a presentation at a conference held in Athabasca.

(May 19) Sara Jaremko, CIRL Research Fellow, made a presentation on "SSRP - A Critical Evaluation of the South Saskatchewan Regional Plan (in Alberta)". This event was held at the University of Calgary and funded by the Alberta Law Foundation. There were 40 registrants. (Slides)

(May 14) Judy Stewart, LLM PhD, made a presentation on "Life Without Me? I Really Can't Imagine Such a Thing! We Need Wills, Powers of Attorney, and Personal Directives", as part of the Saturday Morning at the Law School lecture series, funded by the Alberta Law Foundation. There were 70 registrants. (May 12) David Laidlaw, CIRL Research Fellow, discussed the new Aboriginal Consultation Guidelines released July 28, 2014 and the related developments captured in his updated handbook, Alberta First Nations Consultation & Accommodation Handbook - Updated to 2016. This event was held at the University of Calgary and funded by the Alberta Law Foundation. There were 55 registrants. (Slides)

(May 10) CIRL assisted with the organization of the “Research in the Real World” session. Law students attended the session.

(May 8-22) Research Associate Dr. Chilenye Nwapi served as an Erasmus Mundus Visiting Scholar at the Global and European Studies Institute, University of Leipzig, Germany. During his stay, he participated in the teaching of a course titled "Re-spacing Africa - New Regionalisms". The focus of his module was extractive resource policy in West Africa.

(May 3) Arlene Kwasniak, CIRL Senior Research Fellow and Professor Emerita of Law, Faculty of Law, University of Calgary, presented at the Prairie Habitat Joint Ventures conference and workshop, Wetland Policies, Regulation and Science in Prairie Canada: An Assessment of Mutual Needs and Future Directions, in Regina, Saskatchewan.  The title of her presentation was "Achieving Wetland Conservation in the Canadian Prairies: Policy Linkages and Insights" from Alberta Wetlands: A Law and Policy Guide, Second Edition (2016).


April 2016

(Apr 28-May 2) Arlene Kwasniak, CIRL Senior Research Fellow and Professor Emerita of Law, Faculty of Law, University of Calgary, co-chaired the Canadian Environmental Network Environmental Planning and Assessment Caucus meeting and workshop in Ottawa.

(Apr 23) Sharon Mascher, Professor in the Faculty of Law at the University of Calgary, made a presentation on "Climate Change Law and Policy in a Post-Paris Agreement World", as part of the Saturday Morning at the Law School lecture series, funded by the Alberta Law Foundation. There were 80 registrants. (Slides)

(Apr 14) Arlene Kwasniak, CIRL Senior Research Fellow and Professor Emerita of Law, Faculty of Law, University of Calgary, was an invited participant in the Alberta Land Institute's A Wetland Research Strategy for Alberta Workshop, held at the University of Alberta.

(Apr 11-15) This intensive five day "Certificate in Construction Law", organized by CIRL and Osgoode Professional Development, was held at the University of Calgary Downtown Campus.


March 2016

(Mar 31) David Laidlaw, CIRL Research Fellow, was interviewed by Terry Reith, Briar Stewart, CBC News Edmonton, about the Métis accusing oilsands giant CNRL of economic retaliation over environmental concerns and appears online.

(Mar 19) Chilenye Nwapi, PhD, Banting Postdoctoral Fellow, Faculty of Law, Canadian Institute of Resources Law, made a free presentation on "Concerns about Alberta Companies Bribing Public Officials in Developing Countries", as part of the Saturday Morning at the Law School lecture series, funded by the Alberta Law Foundation. There were 42 registrants. (Slides)

(Mar 9) Allan Ingelson, Associate Professor of Law, University of Calgary, made an invited presentation on “Liability and Risk Management for Induced Seismicity in Canada” at the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists (CSPG), Canadian Society of Exploration Geophysicists (CSEG) and Canadian Well Logging Society (CWLS) 2016 GeoConvention in Calgary.

February 2016

(Feb 26-27) The Canadian Institute of Resources Law, Faculty of Law, the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law and the Ontario Bar Association presented the fifth national symposium, "Environment in the Courtroom: Inspections and Enforcement Issues: On-site and in Court". This symposium, funded by Environment and Climate Change Canada, was held at the University of Ottawa. Registrants attended in person and viewed the live webcast.

Oyeniyi Abe, a Fulbright Scholar from the Loyola University Law School in Chicago, Illinois, visited CIRL.

(Feb 20) David Laidlaw, CIRL Research Fellow, presented "Aboriginal Law 101 Updated" as part of the Saturday Morning at the Law School lecture series, funded by the Alberta Law Foundation. There were 79 registrants. (Slides)

(Jan 21) Dr. Chilenye Nwapi, Banting Postdoctoral Fellow, made the presentation, "Sharing the Fruits of Development: Local Governance Institutions and the Promotion of Inclusive Growth in Extractive Resource Development in Sub-Saharan Africa" at the Harvard Law School's Institute for Global Law and Policy African Regional Workshop, University of Cape Town, Cape Town, South Africa, 17-24 January 2016.
